In the third round of the Champions League, Borussia defeated Sabah 2-1.
Following the match, Borussia's head coach Niko Kovac addressed the media at the press conference:
"This was a very, very important victory for us, and I am very pleased with the way we played and the football we displayed. We performed particularly well in attack. Our victory was completely deserved, as we faced a team that fought until the end and showed great dedication. My team played really well today. To be frank, we showcased good football and created numerous goal-scoring opportunities. Perhaps we should have scored more goals. This is the only minor shortcoming I can mention. However, apart from that, especially in this away game, I am very satisfied with the performance we delivered in our third consecutive away match."
He responded to a question about Chukwueke:
"If I’m not mistaken, we had five shots on goal in the first 10 minutes. At that time, he was active on the right flank. That was good. I think he also played well defensively. He really put in the effort and didn’t shy away from entering duels."
"They managed to break through the opponent's defence several times, whether moving along the flanks or through the centre, with the help of players in the number eight position. The two forwards who performed in attack today did well. Fabio created open spaces, allowing other players to find the space they needed when isolated. In fact, I was also receiving support from our players in the number eight position. It was relatively easy to keep him under control in that structure."
On the two goals scored at the beginning of each half and the pressure:
"As I said, in the first 10 minutes, if I’m not mistaken, we had five shots on goal. At that time, we had already missed opportunities. In fact, we should have scored two or even three goals. This is a point we need to analyse. Our aim was to turn the game in our favour as quickly as possible. Naturally, we also wanted to reduce the excitement of the fans a bit and calm the atmosphere in the stands. We managed to do that really well until the 30th minute. However, afterwards, the small mistakes we made in the build-up allowed the opponent to return to the game. Nevertheless, I must say that we played well, but the opponent also performed really well."
On Sabah:
"Many people think that going to Norway and playing there is easy. Similarly, they think that visiting Azerbaijan is also easy. No, it is not easy at all. Here, there are players with good tactical and technical preparation, who are physically strong. Their head coach has also prepared the team very well for the matches. This is not just about today’s match. We saw this in the last game against Slavia and in the qualifying rounds as well.
So I wasn’t surprised. I have watched many of Sabah’s matches. I am confident that many opponents will face difficulties against this team in the upcoming matches. There are still five games ahead, and I believe that Sabah will create serious problems for their rivals."
